At dissertation level you are expected to present your work in a way that you have probably not used before. So as well as completing all of the background work you will have to produce:

  • Title Page
  • Abstract
  • Acknowledgments
  • Table of contents
  • Table of figures
  • Introduction
  • Main body/discussion
  • Conclusion/Findings
  • Bibliography
  • Appendices
  • Citing

Citing

There are several different referencing systems that are used, but mostly the system used is determined by the field of study that your are working in. The most common system that is used is the APA system (mostly for social sciences).
Most systems will govern not just the way that information about the work/s that you need to cite are presented and the order in which it is presented, it also guides the way that you use citations in your paper.
Many references systems have been updated on a regular basis. Which ever system you are using you need to make sure of the version that you should be using.
If you are not sure or if information is not in your guidance notes then ask your professor. Do not assume that you should use the newest version.
Most word processing programs have the ability to make a referencing/citation system for you, but you do have to have key in the information. This may sound tedious but it does save a lot of time.
These programs can also create the Bibliography for you, If you need more information about the APA system then use this link. Even though the computer can do most of the work for you, do take the time to become familiar with the APA system.
